A little bit about...

Jillian Mascarenhas // afeathery*nest // http://afeatherynest.comMe (the short story)
I'm an American by birth and upbringing, Goan by maternal and paternal heritage, Italian and Swedish by marriage, and feisty by personal preference. I was born in New York, spent my childhood down south, and returned to NYC a few years after university.

I'm married to R, whom I met while on vacation in his hometown in Sicily and dated across the Atlantic for many years before he moved to Manhattan to marry me.

In the Spring of 2014 we moved from NYC to Stockholm. A year later we found out that I was expecting, and our baby boy (RF) was born at the end of 2015.

This is where I share glimpses of my life abroad—if you'd like to keep up you can:

This site (and its evolution)
I started writing a blog this decade in 2012. R and I were planning to leave NYC and move (back) to his continent and I wanted to capture the details of our last year(s) in New York, as well as document all of the bureaucratic rigamarole we went through to get the kinks worked out among our 3 countries for our various residency permits and citizenship requests. At that time I wrote under *sparklingly, and apart from the multi-national shenanigans, I also shared tidbits from my home life and introverted indulgences.

In 2013, weary of the somewhat random name I had originally chosen to write under, I ported everything to a new Blogspot URL: a feathery *nest. It seemed to better encapsulate my never-ending quest to make our lives (regardless of the paperwork hell I was in at the time) snug, cozy, ordered, and serene.

In 2014 we moved to Sweden and once we arrived I began writing about exploring my new city, versus life at home in our apartment. These days you'll see more about my being an expat in Europe, settling into Stockholm, and my trials with the Swedish language.

P.S. The domain name has changed a few times, so you may come across some broken links—sorry!

Our visa / citizenship process
  • update May 2016:
    OFFICIALLY becoming an Italian citizen
Getting the letter notifying me that citizenship had been bestowed on me was one thing, but there was still an oath to be said to make everything officially official.
  • update September 2013:
    Swedish residency granted

I shared in February 2014 that I was granted lifetime residency in Sweden (a prerequisite for becoming a citizen) and we were moving to Stockholm.

  2. Hi J,

I found your blog and I thought you may be interested in the show I work on ‘House Hunters International’?! I’m not sure how long you have been in Sweden but we are looking for English speaking expats who have moved there within the last year or so and would like to share their story.

As you may know, House Hunters International is a half-hour TV show currently airing on the Home and Garden Television Network (HGTV) in America. The series is designed to de-mystify the international home-buying / renting process, by going behind the scenes of a house hunt where expats and their real estate agents tour 3 homes. At its core, House Hunters International is a travel show concentrating on the idiosyncrasies of the locales and what makes them special and different.

Here are some links to show you what our show is all about!

Here are some examples of the show that you can watch on Youtube:

We would love to film in Stockholm again, so please do get in touch if you might be interested in sharing your story.

    Best wishes,
