Postcard from Andalucía: Conil de la Frontera

After driving around the southernmost tip of Spain we headed straight for the beach, where we'd spend the next four days relaxing, swimming, and taking afternoon drives to the nearby pueblos blancos (the famous white hilltop towns of Andalucía).

R had found Hotel Fuerte Conil-Costa Luz, a large, but charming hotel in Conil—a town I thought seemed quite sleepy and quiet based on our drive through to the hotel, but instead we found it came rambunctiously alive after 10PM.

On our first evening we took a walk into town and passed sweet little houses with pure white facades and brilliantly-colored bougainvillaea, birds of paradise and plenty of other flowering plants I didn't recognize crowding up their walls and around their yards. On our second evening, tired of eating out (despite the hotel's quaint breakfasts in a lavender garden and platters of grilled seafood and lush bowls of salmorejo, a gazpacho-type soup native to the region, on the beach), we went back into town to the grocery store and picked up a bottle of wine, fizzy water, hefts of cured meats, wedges of cheese, and arroz con leche (rice pudding), which I couldn't get enough of in Spain, for a picnic on our balcony.

On another evening we drove north to Cadìz and then on the following we headed inland to explore Vejer de la Frontera and Medina-Sidonia. Other than that, though, it was us and the ocean—a perfect interlude before our final stop in Sevilla.
